Maria has a Masters of Education in Counselling Psychology (2013) from the University of Alberta and is currently completing her Advanced Certificate in Child and Youth Mental Health Treatment with the Institute of Child Psychology. While Maria enjoys working with all ages of clients, she specializes in supporting children and teens, with a particular interest in supporting parents and caregivers.

With over 10 years of experience as a Registered Psychologist and the perspective of being a mother of four, Maria brings both professional skill and personal understanding to her work with children, teens, and adults. Known for her compassion, empathy, and approachable nature, Maria is dedicated to creating a safe, non-judgmental space where clients feel genuinely heard, respected, and supported. She offers authentic connection to help process life experiences, helping clients feel more connected to themselves and to others.

Maria takes a client-centered, integrative approach to therapy. Whether you're an adult seeking personal growth or a parent concerned about your child, she tailors her approach to meet you where you are. She draws from approaches such as Emotion Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, as well as attachment based and trauma informed practices. When working with children, she incorporates play therapy techniques–understanding that play is a child’s language and essential to their emotional processing. She also partners with parents and caregivers to ensure that growth continues beyond therapy sessions, fostering lasting positive change for not just the child, but the family. With child clients this often looks like starting with a parent session, followed by periodic parent sessions (often every 3-6 child sessions, depending on the age of the child, and family’s needs). With teen clients, this often looks like starting with either a parent session or a joint parent/teen session, followed by opportunities for parents to participate in portions of future sessions.

Maria has spent the majority of her psychology career supporting children facing complex behavioral, learning, and emotional challenges in the school setting. Her knowledge spans a wide range of presentations, including anxiety, depression, behaviour and emotional regulation, executive functioning, ADHD, learning and intellectual disabilities, addictions, trauma, grief and loss, and more. Additionally, Maria has specialized training and experience in providing support to individuals who have experienced sexual trauma.

While Maria enjoys addressing a variety of issues, she has a particular interest in supporting parents and caregivers.  She believes that parents do their best with the resources they have, and therapy can strengthen those resources, provide new skills, and free parents from self-blame—empowering them to become the parents they want to be.
